in relation to chinglish:
- Success factors
Classical Chinese served as lingua franca in the Far East, where it was used for communication purposes between China and its tribute states like Korea, Vietnam, Japan. Today, Chinese is the national common language of the world’s most populous country, spoken by more native speakers than of any other language. According to Goldman Sachs, China’s economy is set to become the world’s largest by 2050. - Predicament
The writing system, the lack of an alphabet, and the use of tones make Chinese a difficult language to learn for foreigners. Another obstacle to its promulgation is that the use of Chinese is to a large extent limited to China or large overseas Chinese communities. It is seen as a threat to the cultural identity of some Chinese minorities. - Future
In 2004 the Chinese government set up the first Confucius Institute abroad in Seoul, South Korea, for the promotion of Chinese. Today, one new Confucius Institute is opened somewhere in the world every three days, backed by a yearly budget of 25 million US dollars. China is “hot” and on the internet the amount of Chinese content is likely to overtake English content within a couple of years. The competitive advantage of learning Chinese as a second language is growing at the expense of English.
