Chinglish
- Success factors
China has stepped out of isolation, resulting in dynamic interaction with the outside world. According to the Global Language Monitor, 5% to 20% of all newly coined English words in 2006 came from Chinese. Beneficial to the development of Chinglish is the enormous gap that exists between the Chinese and English languages and cultures. Common ground needs to be explored in order to narrow the linguistic gap between the two and Chinglish has the best papers to fill this position. - Predicament
Chinglish is a contact language and as such subject to scrutiny from purists who argue that the chinglification process leads to linguistic contamination rather than cross-fertilization. - Future
Two scenarios: - Code switching: more language learners will gain sufficient levels of proficiency in English and Chinese, enabling them to easily switch between the two.
- Lingua franca: Chinese and English will mix and result in a paradigm shift.
