The Chinglish Roadmap

Towards linguistic convergence in international communication

English
There are roughly 350 million native speakers of English and 1 billion learners of English as a second language. Of the latter, around 300 million are Chinese. Predictions foresee a peak of 2 billion learners of English in 5 years and a rapid decline after that.

Chinese
There are 1 billion plus native speakers of Chinese and 30 million learners of Chinese as a second language. Predictions foresee 100 million learners of Chinese in 5 years.

Chinglish
The word Chinglish was probably coined in the 18th or 19th century when foreign merchants and local tradesmen in Guangdong, China, developed a mix of Chinese and English to communicate with one another. The most referred to example is “long time, no see,” which is a literal translation of 好久不见.
