sorry, I haven't check out what a crane fly is.

We call it as "大蚊"--big mosquito--da\ wen/

大蚊(Crane 
fly)是泛指双翅目(Diptera)大蚊科(Tipulidae)的昆虫,外观一如大号的蚊子,主要有两个亚科,即大蚊亚科(Tipulinae)及亮大蚊亚科(Limoniinae) 
。目前已知台湾的大蚊种类已超过340种。
这类大蚊没具有刺吸式的口喙,不会叮人吸血,主要以花蜜为食。幼虫大部分为植食性水栖,以植物的根茎、腐叶等为食,有些大蚊的幼虫更可能在必要时补食孑孑。成虫体态非常修长,前翅发达,后翅退化成平均棍,飞行速度不快,经常停在草皮或墙上休息,体长从4mm至15mm都有。

crane fly or daddy longlegs in English is a sort of long-legged insect 
that resembles a mosquito but that does not actually bite. Still 
wondering what it is in Chinese.

Well..
It depend on "How" you define crane fly. ^0^
If...Crane fly means 駕鶴西歸 which means "die" in Chinese, I might have
some ideas.
Otherwise, do Chinese call "crane fly" as "daddy longlegs"? I found no
relation between two of them.
Or...
You take "longleg" as a verb metaphrase into Chinese "腿長"--
and metaphrase again into English as "leg stretch", then metaphrase
again into Chinese as "腿一伸"--this also means "die" in Chinese.

However, this is too Chinglish. Hahahahaha

Cheers. Does it also mean crane fly in Chinese? Is it commonly used? Is 
there another word for it?
